Harold spent his early years in Topeka and later lived in Honolulu and Kaneohe, Hawaii, before returning to Kansas, where he and his family resided in Overland Park and Olathe. In recent years, he made his home in Jupiter, Florida.
He graduated from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and pursued studies in oceanography and chemistry at the University of Hawaii, reflecting his intellectual curiosity, love of learning and his connection to the natural world. Harold was self-taught in computer skills during what he called, “the leather helmet days of computers.” He worked as a systems programmer and systems analyst in the fields of professional photography and railroad traffic controls.
Harold had a deep love for the outdoors. He found joy in camping, hiking, and kayaking, and sitting on the beach to watch the sunset with his wife. He took several trips to the American west and southwest where he completed multi-day, solo, wilderness hikes. Whether exploring a trail or spending time on the water, he was happiest in beautiful places. Harold was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Jupiter-Tequesta, Palm Beach Pack and Paddle and volunteered for several years at the Loggerhead Marine Life Center.
Harold experienced significant challenges in his life, but met them with determination and perseverance. He was a man of strong character, always honest and truthful.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Harriett Schiesser; his daughter, Deborah Gragg and her husband Jameson; a daughter-in-law, Megan Johntz and two grandsons, Luke Johntz Schiesser and Benjamin Johntz Schiesser.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Heath Glenn Schiesser; his brother, Norman Glenn Schiesser and his sister-in-law, Janet Schiesser whose memories he carried with enduring love.
