Helen Christensen Britton of Westfield, New Jersey and Juno Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at her home in Florida on April 20, 2021, just four months after her loving husband of 73 years, Robert Hill Britton.
“Chris” was born on July 30, 1925 in New York, New York, the only child of Bernt Ingemann and Kirsten Andersen Christensen. She moved to Plainfield, New Jersey in 1930, and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1943. Chris earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, class of 1946 from Vassar College. Chris enjoyed a short and dedicated career. In 1947, upon the end of WWII, Chris married Robert, her dear friend Barbara’s older brother. When her husband Robert was called to rejoin the Army during the Korean War, Chris gave up her professional pursuits to travel with him to various Army bases around the country. In 1950, Chris and Bob moved to Mountainside, New Jersey. She then devoted her life to raising their children and serving the communities in which they lived. Summers were spent at their home in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.
Chris was involved in numerous civic and recreational groups as well as being a founding member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside, a longtime member of Echo Lake Country Club and Tequesta Golf Club. Helen was a talented golfer, achieving two holes in one, accomplished pianist, gourmet cook, knitter, bridge player and world traveler.
She was a loving and supportive mother to her two children and four grandchildren. She is survived by her devoted children and grandchildren, son, Bruce Christensen Britton (Andrea); daughter, Pamela Britton Kolb (David), and her three grandchildren, Adla (Ryan) Britton, Owen Britton, and Kirsten (Ryan) Kolb; sister-inlaw, Louise Basbas, and numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives in the United States and Denmark.
In addition to her husband Bob, she was predeceased by her beloved grandson, Erik Kolb.
A Memorial Service celebrating the lives of both Robert and Helen Britton will be held for family in June. The family kindly requests that expressions of sympathy be memorial donations to the Erik Britton Kolb ’02 Memorial Scholarship, Lafayette College, 307 Markel Hall, Easton, PA. 18042-1770.
