
Jack was born in Frederick County, Virginia on February 12,1934, to Elwood Smith and Elsie Gruber. He attended Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and then later received an AA Fire Science Degree from Montgomery College. He met the love of his life, Sue Jane Kayser and they were married on June 5, 1973. They celebrated 50 loving years of marriage together. Jack spent his career as a Sergeant with the Kensington Fire Department for 32 years.
Jack was on the Board of Fire Fighters Auxiliary Association and a volunteer for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He also belonged to the National Capitol Rabbit Breeders Association as well as the Lotus Club. Jack and Sue competed in the Maryland Senior (Olympics) Games and went on to compete at the national levels. Sports included golf, tennis, volleyball, softball, badminton, and ping pong, as well as hunting, kayaking, fishing, crabbing, and gardening.
Jack is survived by his wife, Sue; his children, Barbara (Vince) Brown, Jacques Smith, Jr., Kathleen (Rob) Davis, Terrance Smith, and stepchildren, Kert Scheele, Janice Scheele, Judy (Jim) Orzech, and Robin Garvey. Jack and Sue have 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild born on April 12, 2024. Jack was predeceased in death by his first wife Alice May Smith, his parents, and many siblings.
