A number of years ago Joel played Mr. Gilbert Stuart in a scenario we presented at Mount Vernon.  I played Dolley Madison.  A memory that I shall treasure and one that will resonate with me for years to come was "Dolley Madison's"  line to Mr. Stuart:  

"Mr. Stuart, you are all the rage."

And indeed, so was our Mr. Joel Nichols . . . all the rage.

When I started working as an interpreter at Mount Vernon, Joel  served as one of my trainers.  He struck me as one of those good-natured, easygoing people with a ready sense of humor. We all missed him when he transitioned to working at the mill. Even then, it was such a pleasure whenever I ran into him, and I always received a warm welcome. He was just delightful - a true gentleman.

Joel and I started at Mount Vernon at the same time and it was always a joy to work with him. He was always talking fondly of his children and grandchildren.  Later on in my tenure at Mount Vernon I worded as the scheduler for the Interpreters  for the house, mill and farm. It was always fun going to the Mill and spending time with Joel.  I always considered him one of "my Millers".   Even after I left Mount Vernon and came back to visit if Joel was there I always got a warm greeting.  He truly was one of a kind. 

Joel was the consummate gentleman with a raucous sense of humor. I worked with him at Mount Vernon from the house to the farm & the mill. Behind the scenes humor got us through difficult days especially fighting off attacking turkeys. I will miss him terribly. Love to his family.
