Jonathan was born on August 29, 1938, to Ernest William Mohler and Anna McCullough. He grew up with a strong sense of curiosity and a remarkable desire to understand how things worked—qualities that would shape both his career and the way he lived his life. He was predeceased by his brothers, Ernest William “Billy,” Robert, and James, and his sisters, Vivian and Shirley (Burrough).
Jonathan dedicated his life to learning, discovery, and service. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Columbia Union College, where he met his wife of 67 years, Marjorie “Sally” Jean Bond. He then earned a master’s degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of Cincinnati, and a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Wyoming. He proudly served his country as a research scientist with the Department of Energy, where his intelligence, persistence, and love of science found a natural home.
Even after retirement, Jonathan never stopped exploring and creating. He founded Energetic Materials Associates and Spectre Enterprises Inc., developing and perfecting his expertise in thermite technology and earning numerous patents for his work. For Jonathan, science was more than a profession—it was a lifelong passion. He was always curious, always thinking, and always eager to learn something new.
But for all of his professional accomplishments, Jonathan’s greatest joy was his family.
He treasured his time with his grandchildren and loved being part of their lives. Whether sharing a story, offering advice, or simply enjoying their company, he found a special happiness in being their grandfather. The love he had for them was evident in the time and attention he gave them, and the memories he created with them will remain a lasting part of his family’s story.
Jonathan also had an adventurous spirit and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He loved hiking through the Rockies, sailing, and running. He was happiest when he was active, outside, and challenging himself.
Running, in particular, became one of his greatest passions. He approached it with the same determination and perseverance that defined so much of his life. In his 60s, he completed both the Disney Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon as a proud participant in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training program, raising thousands of dollars for blood cancer research. These races reflected not only his endurance and discipline, but also his deep commitment to helping others and making a meaningful difference beyond himself.
Jonathan lived a life filled with purpose. He was a man who valued knowledge, embraced adventure, worked hard, and loved deeply. He leaves behind not only a remarkable record of scientific achievement, but also something far more meaningful: the memories, lessons, laughter, and love he shared with the people closest to him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjorie “Sally” Jean Bond; his children, Timothy William Mohler, Thomas Andrew Mohler (Aurora Bacquerie Mohler), and Charles Allen Mohler (Lisa Freeman Mohler); and his cherished grandchildren, Madeleine Zoe Mohler, Jayden Ysabella Mohler, Andrew Jonathan Mohler, Matthew Miles Mohler, Bram Freeman Mohler, and Wynn Freeman Mohler.
Jonathan will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. His curiosity will live on in those who continue to ask questions. His adventurous spirit will live on in those who seek new horizons. His determination will live on in those who face challenges without giving up. And most of all, his love will live on in his family.
He spent his life exploring the world, pursuing knowledge, and challenging himself to go farther. His greatest journey was the life he shared with those he loved—and that journey will remain a cherished part of all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held August 29th, 6:00 PM at 209 Bear’s Club Drive, Jupiter, FL. Please RSVP to [email protected] and provide your full name and relationship to the family so that you can be added to the security list.
