Loretta Kaufman, born Loretta Morello, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, at the age of 93. Known affectionately as Laura to her close friends and family, she was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Rose and Nat Morello, and raised in a warm, close, knit family surrounded by loving aunts and uncles. A graduate of New Utrecht High School, Laura married her first husband soon after graduation and welcomed her first child, Richard, at the age of 25. His Marine service took them to South Carolina and later to San Francisco, both a culture shock for a spirited woman from Brooklyn. Those years opened her eyes to the realities of discrimination, which she deeply opposed. Although she enjoyed the beauty and culture of San Francisco, her heart always longed for family, and she soon returned home to Brooklyn. After returning from California, Laura began working for Clairol, where she was admired for her professionalism, elegance, and dedication. During this time, she settled in Brighton Beach’s Trump Village, where she built lifelong friendships and created a loving home for herself and her young son. It was there she met her second husband, Hy Kaufman, whom she married in 1965. Hy had two children from his first marriage, Norm and the late Carolyn, whom Laura embraced and loved as her own. In 1967, Laura and Hy welcomed their son, Marc Kaufman, completing their family. Throughout the 1970s, Laura dedicated herself to raising her children and supporting her family. In the early 1980s, she began working for Gould Paper Corporation as an executive assistant, where she was deeply respected for her dedication, warmth, and attention to detail. She remained there until her retirement. In 2001, she and Hy moved to Boynton Beach, Florida to enjoy their golden years together. After Hy’s passing in 2015, Laura remained in Boynton Beach until 2020, when she moved to Harbor Chase Assisted Living in Palm Beach Gardens, where she was lovingly cared for. Laura will be remembered as a beautiful soul, inside and out, a devoted mother, loving grandmother and great, grandmother, and loyal friend. She had a passion for cooking and was renowned among family and friends for her delicious meals and generous spirit. Her kitchen was always filled with laughter, good food, and love. She is survived by her sons Richard and Marc, her stepson Norm, and her cherished daughters-in-law Marianna (married to Marc), Karen (married to Norm), and Sita (married to Richard) who all adored her deeply. She was the proud grandmother of Janna, Bianca, David, Andrew, Ian, and Munay, and great, grandmother of Aniyah, Ava, and Aliyana. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
A Memorial Service will be held at St Patrick Catholic Church, located at 13591 Prosperity Farms Rd, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, 33410, on October 24, 2025, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.
An internment is scheduled at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 FL-7, Wellington, FL, 33449, on October 24, 2025, from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
