Born on August 25, 1938, in Cabo Verde, to Luisa Brito Santos and Manuel José dos Santos, Luisa was known in her hometown for her extraordinary talent as a seamstress and her remarkable baking skills. Her creativity, generosity, and gentle spirit made her cherished by all who knew her.
In the early 2000s, Luisa immigrated to the United States — not seeking a better life for herself but determined to create better opportunities for her children and future generations. Once in the U.S., she worked tirelessly in several roles: as a nanny, in a bakery, in a perfume factory, and in house cleaning. Through hard work and perseverance, she and her husband opened doors that allowed all her children and grandchildren the choice to immigrate if they wished.
After retiring, Luisa continued giving back to her community as a caring, loving, and devoted Christian neighbor. Her kindness was steady, her presence comforting, and her faith unwavering.
As a mother, she was gentle, patient, and endlessly supportive. She always made time to listen, always offered wise advice, and always knew how to comfort those she loved. And when it came to protecting her family, she was fierce — a true lioness, defending those she loved with strength and courage.
Luisa lived a life defined by kindness, resilience, and unwavering devotion to her family. She was the heart of our home — a source of comfort, wisdom, and laughter.
She dedicated her life to caring for those she loved. She created beautiful bridal fashion, cooked unforgettable meals infused with her secret ingredient — love — and gave far more than she ever received. She had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel seen and valued, whether through her warm smile, her thoughtful words, or her famous “little gifts” you didn’t know you needed.
Luisa is survived by her husband, Victor Almeida, her five children — Maria Janvier, Astrigilda Almeida, Ieda Almeida, Odete Slade, and Benvindo Almeida — as well as her sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward her legacy of love, generosity, and compassion.
She is also survived by her beloved siblings Ricardina Lelis and Sergio Brito, both residing in Sal, Cabo Verde, and Deolinda Brito Santos, who lives in Setúbal, Portugal.
Though she is no longer with us in person, her spirit will forever live on in the lives she touched.
