Maria "Cristina" Barrero

Maria “Cristina” Barrero – beloved mother, wife, sister, aunt, & friend - passed away surrounded by her two cherished sons, Carlos & Javier, and her husband of 20+ years, Keith. Born in Santa Cruz, Bolivia to hard working parents Josefina and Tomas, Cristina taught herself English, worked her way through college, and eventually became an accounting manager for large companies both in Bolivia and the US.

Cristina was an everlasting source of positivity who sought to make the world better by understanding those around her. She had a way of relating to people whether they be a CEO of a company or a vendor on the street – they all smiled or laughed after speaking with her. Cristina would assist & mentor people at work or just help a perfect stranger, without anyone else knowing about her “good” deed or wanting to take credit for it – to her, it was just the right thing to do. And as one can see in the picture above, Cristina had a smile that could light up a room.

Cristina was beautifully talented in all forms of arts and crafts. She was an accomplished painter, gardener (specializing in orchids), baker of Bolivian dishes and cakes, & a good seamstress. She really enjoyed doing crafts and making things for family, friends, or charitable organizations. And Cristina loved to dance – whether attending her weekly line dancing, dancing to traditional Bolivian music, or just dancing and singing with her dog Vanilla at the house.

Cristina always put family and friends first – making sure to visit family and friends wherever they were or arranging trips where all could meet up whether on cruises with friends, meeting family in Hawaii, or arranging family to visit her in Florida and Illinois.

Cristina also had strong faith and looked forward to going to church to pray and sing along with the chorus every week. She cherished her time in her church. Every time she went to mass, she would always say the phrase “My God is an Awesome God” no matter what she was going through – good or bad.

Cristina and her husband were fortunate to be able to retire early and were looking forward to a wonderful 2nd half of life together. Unfortunately, this time was cut short by Cristina’s 2nd courageous battle with Cancer.

Cristina is survived by her devoted husband, her two sons which are the world to her, and her four siblings, Franklin, Hector, Nella, and Neisa. Cristina would also want to mention her dear friends in Florida, Santa Cruz, & the Washington DC area – they all know who they are. And she would want to mention her nieces, nephews, and In-laws.

Many of you reading this obituary are heartbroken because a really good soul was taken too early. She will really be missed. Our family looks forward to keeping her spirit alive.

The Funeral Mass for Cristina occurred on September 11th, 2021 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jupiter, FL at 10:30am. The church was under renovation and September 11th was the 1st available date for her Funeral Mass and Cristina’s family thought it best to have her service in the place of worship that she revered and enjoyed. The Funeral Mass was extremely well attended by family, friends, and past co-workers. The family appreciated all the flowers received which made the Mass even more beautiful in honor of Cristina – her favorite color is pink and pink was reflected throughout the flowers.

The family thanks all of you who attended the mass either in person or virtually for making this Mass a beautiful tribute to Cristina.

And in the spirit of Cristina wanting to mentor and help people, the family will be establishing a scholarship/charity called “Cristina’s Orchids” to help college bound children from the town of Padilla in Bolivia with expenses. Prior to her passing, Cristina had set aside a small amount of money to give to college bound students from this remote town in Bolivia where her parents were originally from. Cristina wanted this donation to occur for a minimum of 5 years for 5 different students after her death. The idea behind the money award was that it would go to a smart individual who also had some sort of acumen/gift in the arts or crafts – music, sewing, painting, gardening, etc. and is a good soul – sort of like Cristina. Cristina visited this town a couple of years before her passing and it broke her heart that some of the students that she met at the local high school may not be able to attend college because of lack of money. And never wanting to draw attention to herself, Cristina did not want this scholarship in her name – she was doing this independently and anonymously. Her family would like to add a little more to her amount with the idea of benefitting as many students as possible and to give Cristina the recognition she deserves – thereby naming it “Cristina’s Orchids”. Note that Cristina’s family had previously assisted one of the schools in Padilla with getting computers, etc. – picture can be found in family photos section on the Memorial Web Site. María "Cristina" Barrero - amada madre, esposa, hermana, tía y amiga - falleció rodeada de sus dos queridos hijos, Carlos y Javier, y de su esposo de más de 20 años, Keith. Nacida en Santa Cruz, Bolivia, de padres muy trabajadores, Josefina y Tomás, Cristina aprendió por sí misma el inglés, se abrió camino en la universidad y, finalmente, se convirtió en gerente de contabilidad para grandes empresas tanto en Bolivia como en los Estados Unidos.

Cristina era una eterna fuente de positividad que buscaba mejorar el mundo comprendiendo a los que la rodeaban. Tenía una forma de relacionarse con la gente, ya fuera un director general de una empresa o un vendedor en la calle: todos sonreían o se reían después de hablar con ella. Cristina ayudaba y orientaba a la gente en el trabajo o simplemente ayudaba a un perfecto desconocido, sin que nadie supiera de su "buena" acción ni quisiera atribuirse el mérito: para ella, era simplemente lo que había que hacer. Y como se puede ver en la foto de arriba, Cristina tenía una sonrisa que podía iluminar una habitación.

Cristina tenía un gran talento en todas las formas de arte y artesanía. Era una pintora consumada, jardinera (especializada en orquídeas), panadera de platos y pasteles bolivianos, y una buena costurera. Disfrutaba mucho haciendo manualidades y cosas para la familia, los amigos o las organizaciones benéficas. Y a Cristina le encantaba bailar - ya sea asistiendo a su baile en línea semanal, bailando música tradicional boliviana, o simplemente bailando y cantando con su perro Vainilla en la casa.

Cristina siempre puso a la familia y a los amigos en primer lugar, asegurándose de visitar a la familia y a los amigos dondequiera que estuvieran u organizando viajes en los que todos pudieran reunirse, ya fuera en cruceros con amigos, reuniéndose con la familia en Hawai o organizando que la familia la visitara en Florida e Illinois.

Cristina también tenía una fuerte fe y esperaba con ansias ir a la iglesia para rezar y cantar con el coro cada semana. Apreciaba el tiempo que pasaba en su iglesia. Cada vez que iba a misa, siempre decía la frase "Mi Dios es un Dios impresionante", sin importar lo que estuviera pasando - bueno o malo.

Cristina y su marido tuvieron la suerte de poder jubilarse pronto y esperaban una maravillosa segunda mitad de la vida juntos. Desgraciadamente, este tiempo se vio truncado por la segunda y valiente batalla de Cristina contra el cáncer.

A Cristina le sobreviven su devoto marido, sus dos hijos, que son el mundo para ella, y sus cuatro hermanos, Franklin, Héctor, Nella y Neisa. Cristina también querría mencionar a sus queridos amigos de Florida, Santa Cruz y el área de Washington DC - todos ellos saben quiénes son. Y querría mencionar a sus sobrinas, sobrinos y suegros.

Muchos de los que leen este obituario tienen el corazón roto porque un alma muy buena se ha ido demasiado pronto. La echaremos mucho de menos. Nuestra familia espera mantener vivo su espíritu.

La Misa Funeral para Cristina ocurrió el 11 de septiembre de 2021 en la Iglesia Católica de San Pedro en Júpiter, FL a las 10:30am. La iglesia estaba en renovación y el 11 de septiembre fue la primera fecha disponible para su misa funeral y la familia de Cristina pensó que era mejor tener su servicio en el lugar de culto que ella veneraba y disfrutaba. La Misa Funeral contó con una gran asistencia de familiares, amigos y antiguos compañeros de trabajo. La familia agradeció todas las flores recibidas que hicieron que la misa fuera aún más hermosa en honor a Cristina - su color favorito es el rosa y el rosa se reflejó en todas las flores.

Antes de su fallecimiento, Cristina había reservado una pequeña cantidad de dinero para ayudar a los estudiantes universitarios de esta remota ciudad de Bolivia de la que eran originarios sus padres. Cristina quería que esta donación se hiciera durante un mínimo de 5 años para 5 estudiantes diferentes después de su muerte. La idea detrás de la donación de dinero era que fuera a una persona inteligente que también tuviera algún tipo de perspicacia/donación en las artes o la artesanía - música, costura, pintura, jardinería, etc. y que fuera un alma buena - algo así como Cristina. Cristina visitó esta ciudad un par de años antes de su fallecimiento y le rompió el corazón que algunos de los estudiantes que conoció en el instituto local no pudieran asistir a la universidad por falta de dinero. Y como no quería llamar la atención, Cristina no quería que esta beca llevara su nombre: lo hacía de forma independiente y anónima. Su familia quiere añadir un poco más a su importe con la idea de beneficiar al mayor número posible de estudiantes y dar a Cristina el reconocimiento que se merece, por lo que la han bautizado como "Las Orquídeas de Cristina". Hay que tener en cuenta que la familia de Cristina ya había ayudado anteriormente a una de las escuelas de Padilla a conseguir ordenadores, etc. - La foto se puede encontrar en la sección de fotos de la familia en el sitio web del Memorial.
