A TRIBUTE TO MY MOM
Written by: Nancy A. McBride
Mary Alice McBride, Mother, Wife and Friend
When I remember my mother, I remember a woman who was kind, caring, compassionate, feisty and stubborn. I have often been told she and I are a lot alike and looking at this photo, even looked alike. I always said that was good for me; that I came from good stock. When Dad died in 1995, we became even more of a team, supporting each other and hanging out together. She was a lot of fun and all of my friends loved her. Everyone did!
As she got older, her world became smaller but everyone who came in contact with her would comment on her spirit, enthusiasm and upbeat attitude. She used to describe herself as Pollyanna; each day brought new, wonderful and positive moments. She was 92 and until that terrible event on Friday, November 30th, she lived alone with minimal assistance.
She had a wonderful cat named Lionel, whom she cherished for 4 years. When Lionel left her, I think it broke her heart. Maybe that’s why she had this terrible “Broken Heart Syndrome” heart attack. I waited a few months, however I was bound and determined to get Mom a new cat, and we found Noah. His person had died and he was wasting away in animal care and control until Wendy from The Pet Cottage broke him out and brought him to my Mom. It was love at first sight for my Mom, and while she had been talking to Lionel every day, she now had a new friend and confidant. I think she knew she was not going to resume the life she once had and she was very concerned about Noah. Please know my Mom loved us but also dearly loved her cats. She would want to know Noah is being cared for and living the life of comfort and kibbles he deserves. To honor my Mom, I can’t think of anything better than supporting The Pet Cottage and Noah. I know I will not be able to fully grieve my mother’s loss until this precious 12 -14 year old man is taken care of by someone who will love him as much as my Mom did.
