Raymond Herrick Chaplin was born in New Hampshire in 1941 to Raymond George Chaplin and Dorothy Whipple (Strachan) Chaplin. Ray grew up in Nashua, New Hampshire with his elder sister Barbara. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover in 1959 and Brown University in 1963.
Ray served in the United States Navy as a Naval Flight Officer, serving in the Vietnam War and later stationed in London. He spent many years as a CPA in New England and Florida. During the 1970s and 1980s, Ray was the owner and operator of The Mad Duck, an inn, restaurant, and banquet facility in Barnstable, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Through the late 2010’s, Ray was a frequent presence as an election day worker and trained many fellow volunteers during his years of service.
In Ray's own words, "I have owned, or been owned, by dachshunds since 1969.” Ray spent many enthusiastic years as a breeder and exhibitor. He served as a committee head, board member, treasurer, and president of the Florida East Coast Dachshund Club, and as a regional chair, show chair, rescue coordinator, and national committee member of the Dachshund Club of America. He is remembered by colleagues in the community as "a true gentleman with a great sense of humor and always more than willing to help a fellow exhibitor.”
Another of Ray’s many passions throughout his life was playing the game of Bridge. He was a regular participant in several weekly games and was known as a fun and skilled trick-taking player.
Ray is survived by the families of his four nephews - Doug, Bernadette, Stephanie, and Megan Larratt of California; Glenn, Elizabeth, Colin, and Connor Fleming-Larratt of New York; Russ, Alex, Michael, Katie, and Andrew Larratt of California; and Greg, Melissa, JJ and Sammy Larratt of Washington - and many friends and colleagues, including his close friend Travis London. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Dorothy, his sister Barbara, and his husband Michael Scarbrough. A service to celebrate Ray’s life is planned for late January 2024. In remembrance of Ray’s life and love, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the organizations listed below.
