Born in Lackawanna, New York on January 30th, 1938, he was raised in South Buffalo, New York by George and Evelyn Frank Chase. After high school Richard served in the United States Navy and survived going overboard in the North Sea. As a young man he worked in sales and construction, which aided him in building two family homes by hand. Yet, he found his true calling when he unleashed his entrepreneurial spirit, owning and operating several businesses including the first video store in York, Maine.
Despite his many years in New York, living several years in Rhode Island, and his retirement in Florida: it is Maine that he would always refer to as home. It was there that he learned to sail when the sun was shining and ski when there was snow on the slopes. Always an active man, he excelled on both the racquetball and tennis courts, golf course, cycling and even as recently as three weeks ago declaring himself a “gym rat”.
He was an artist creating beautiful oil paintings, and a skilled woodworker often tinkering in his workshop. He was the master of projects and loved making lists and checking things off.
Richard had an adventurous spirit and always enjoyed trying new things and seeing new places. In his retirement, he and his wife Pat would travel to Aruba for many years, and visited Europe together enjoying trips to Budapest, England, Ireland and to visit his son in Denmark.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Patricia Chase of Jupiter, Florida; brother Donald Chase of Milford, Delaware; sister Mary Connors of Kittery Point, Maine; sons Stephen Chase of Frederikssund, Denmark and Richard Chase Jr. of Phillipston, Massachusetts; daughters Jennifer Jennings of Melbourne, Florida and Sally Chase of West Palm Beach, Florida; grandchildren Sarah Chase of Frederikssund, Denmark; Chelsie Simard of Davenport, Florida; Emma Chase of Frederikssund, Denmark, Hannah Chase of Frederikssund, Denmark and Oliver Jennings of Melbourne, Florida; and devoted dog Milton “aka Uncle Milton”.
He is predeceased by his parents, brothers Daniel Chase and George Chase Jr., and sister Linda Chase.
He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A graveside ceremony for family will be held in August in York, Maine. A Memorial Mass open to all will be held on his birthday, January 30th, 2025 at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida at 10am.
Memorial donations in his honor can be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project, Doctors Without Borders, or the charity of your choice.
