Dick was born on Christmas Eve, 1937, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, to Harry Morton Yarnes and Cora Christina (Jenness) Yarnes. He grew up among the lakes of northern Iowa, where he developed a lifelong love of hunting and fishing. He graduated from Morningside College with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and served in the Army National Guard from 1960 to 1963. He worked in the family business, Yarnes Construction Company, in Spirit Lake, developing many of the roads in Dickinson County.
In early 1963, Dick followed his sister to Los Angeles, California, and never looked back. There, at church, he met Rose Marie Calderon. They were married on August 24, 1963, beginning a marriage of 63 years.
Dick spent more than 25 years as an insurance agent with Allstate. He was also an expert woodworker, and the furniture he built by hand will be treasured by his family for generations. In 2021, Dick and Rose Marie moved to Palm Beach Gardens to be closer to family. At their assisted living community, he became known for his guitar playing and singing, and he loved performing for friends and family.
Dick was a man of deep Christian faith. He was always kind, and he never missed a chance to connect with people. Everyone he met felt it.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Rose Marie; his son, Kenneth (Sherri) Yarnes, of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; and his daughter, Kerrie (Howard) Lance, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Kristina Yarnes; and his siblings Gerald Yarnes, Golda Yarnes, Harry Yarnes Jr., Verla Yarnes, and Evadne Yarnes.
