Robert James Failla

Born on December 14, 1942 in Newark NJ, Bob was the son of Joseph Failla and Josephine Failla. He lived a life defined by devotion to his family, lifelong friendships, service to his country, and an enduring love of sports.

Bob was the devoted husband of Marilyn Schaeffner. He was the loving father of Robert Failla and his wife, Sinyeon Kim, and Jeanette Rysdeck and her husband, Robert Rysdeck. He was the proud grandfather of Katie Rysdeck and Ryan Rysdeck, and he also cherished his stepson, Robert Gray, his wife, Fran, and his step-grandchildren, Abigail Gray and Owen Gray.

Bob was a Seton Hall graduate and Navy man before building a successful career in sales; but his love of family, friends, sports, fishing, and gardening defined him. He was respected for his professionalism, integrity, and genuine ability to connect with people. Whether working with customers, colleagues, or friends, Bob had a gift for making others feel welcome and valued.

Bob played competitive softball for more than 60 years and spent more than 50 years officiating high school football, baseball, and basketball. On the field and on the court, Bob earned the respect of athletes, coaches, fellow officials, and friends through his fairness, dedication, and unwavering love of the game.

Another passion was fishing. Bob could frequently be found on a snook charter off the Jupiter Inlet or casting from the shore. Bob always had a good story to tell about the 'big one' that got away or had to be thrown back. Fishing brought him peace, happiness, and countless memorable moments.

Above all else, Bob treasured his family and the friendships he cultivated throughout his life. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable ability to make people feel comfortable from the very first conversation. His kindness, loyalty, quick sense of humor, and generous spirit created friendships that lasted a lifetime and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Bob's legacy lives on in the family he loved, the lifelong friendships he treasured, the athletes and officials whose lives he influenced, and everyone fortunate enough to have shared a conversation, a ball field, or a fishing trip with him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
