In 1935, his family moved to Bay Shore-Brightwaters, Long Island, New York where he attended the Bay Shore school system. He graduated in the top 10% of his class in 1949. He recently was an honoree at his alma mater’s graduation ceremony as a 75-year alumnus. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in business, he spent two years in the army, returning to Bay Shore and selling insurance.
He met his future wife, Freddi Vinitsky, on a blind date. It was love at first sight. She proposed three weeks later. He joined the management training program at Abraham & Strauss department store, learning the retail business. In 1960, he opened a tuxedo rental shop where he outfitted grooms and ushers in over 25,000 wedding parties until he sold the business in 2006. Bob also dabbled in real estate and owned several commercial rental properties.
Bob and Freddi married in 1958 and purchased a home in Bay Shore. Lisa was born in 1959 and Teri in 1960. Bob and Freddi moved to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida in 2001, becoming very involved in dachshund rescue. They continued to be failed foster parents, so they ended up adopting many doxies over the years. However, Bay Shore was forever in Bob’s heart.
Bob was a long-standing member of the Bay Shore Jewish Center, co-founded by his late father, David. As a businessman, he was a member of the local Rotary International chapter, becoming a Paul Harris fellow in 1986. In Florida he became a member of the local Moose Lodge where he and Freddi played bingo every Thursday. He and Freddi loved to travel. Freddi’s love of the Peanuts comic strip and being a collector of all things Peanuts, took them to Japan many times. He was a sports fan, both college and professional, and at one time wanted to be a sportswriter. In Florida, he attended adult education lectures at Florida Atlantic University. He was an avid reader and always kept up with current events.
Bob was the consummate tour guide in New York and Florida for friends who visited from around the world. He loved to tell stories and bad Dad jokes. His most fervent wish is to be remembered as a considerate person.
He leaves behind daughters, Lisa Sherrin Margolin of Champaign, Illinois and Teri Sue Margolin-Hughes (Richard) of Jupiter Farms; his granddaughter, Skylar Rose Margolin, a recent graduate of the University of Florida, Gainesville; his nephew, David Margolin; his nieces, Amy Margolin and Susan Margolin-Beckwith and he also leaves behind his canine companions Samson, Chelsea and Sunshine.
He was predeceased by his older brother, Jerome.
The family is also grateful to Trustbridge Hospice.
