Dan was educated at St. Louis University High School and the University of Missouri. He spent his working careers in the insurance and golf industries, ending as a sales associate for Sports Authority on Maui. Dan was a gifted athlete, excelling in both tennis and basketball. His gentleness of spirit were accompanied by the driest of wits.
Dan moved to Hawaii about twenty years ago, and remained a true islander for the rest of his life. Many will remember him as the whale watcher, who inspired many Maui residents to join him head down in the surf listening to whale song off Maui beaches. Dan was a dedicated friend of Bill W. and his peace, joy and serenity were a power of example to many. Dan's acceptance of the shock of his terminal condition at such a young age was an inspiration to us all. He regarded his fate simply as God's will for him, and he accepted it in his heart of hearts.
Dan is survived by his caretakers, Kathy Flood, Bernie Edgell, and "Steamer" Johnson; his ward, Noel Maculam; his sister, Marianne O'Malley; his brothers, Bill, Steve and Mike Pelletier; and a host of nephews, nieces and in-laws who love him dearly, as do we all. Rest in peace, our brother. Long live The King.
We will say "Aloha" to Dan at a memorial service to be held on the lawn area of The Maui Sunset Resort on Saturday, January 10 at 4pm following with a spreading of his ashes by traditional canoe at sea at 5:30 pm. All are welcome. Please bring finger food to share. Beverages will be provided.
