
Darby Drewyer, 53, of Haiku, a loving and caring husband, devoted son, brother, uncle and 17-year employee/Manager of Neil Pryde/Adventure Sports Maui, died peacefully at home after a courageous 15 month battle with a brain tumor. Darby was born in Takoma Park, Maryland and lived on Maui 31 years. Survivors include his loving wife and soulmate of more than 30 years, Michelle, and his adoring Golden Retriever, Kona; sisters Diane Caplan (Mitchelle), Clarksville, Md., Donna Owen (William), Reston, Va., Debra Flowers (James), Ashburn, Va., his parents, Darwin & Kay Drewyer of Manteo, NC., and eight nieces and nephews. Darby was an experienced and dedicated wind- and kite-surfer who discovered the sport as a teenager. It truly was one of his great loves of life. Michelle shared that love and together they traveled internationally to new and interesting wind- and kite-surfing locations every Fall.
Darby will be remembered for his charismatic personality, genuine care for others and a zest for life. He never met an individual that he couldn’t get along with, and with the assist of the international scope of his business dealings, Darby had hundreds of good friends on Maui, throughout the Islands and worldwide.
Darby attended Valley Isle Fellowship Church. A beach-front memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Darby’s name to Hospice Maui, 400 Mahalani St., Wailuku 96793; phone: (808) 244-5555.
