January 2, 1934 - April 19, 2026
Dorothy Kuʻuleialoha Kapuaʻala Alo, 92, a longtime resident of Pukalani, Maui, and most recently of Kahului, Maui, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Dorothy was born on January 2, 1934, to Victoria Kamuela Leslie Kapuaʻala and Ernest Raymond Kapuaʻala. She was the fifth of six children, the only daughter, and the last surviving sibling of her family.
Dorothy was hardworking, resourceful, creative, and deeply loving. To her family she was simply “our rock.” She lived with a generous heart and a steady aloha, and throughout her life she helped raise and care for several generations of children in her home. Those who came through her door were attended to with warmth, humor, patience, and love. She was a woman who was deeply loved in this world, and her presence shaped the lives of many.
She loved music and grew up singing in the Gospel of Salvation church choir. She was also a passionate seamstress, especially when sewing for family, and she was known for her beautiful craftwork and handmade creations. Her creativity found one of its fullest expressions in floral design. Dorothy was a gifted floral arranger whose work reflected her grace, artistry, and love of beauty.
Dorothy worked for many years in food and beverage and in the hospitality industry, including seventeen years at the Royal Lahaina Resort in Kāʻanapali. Her work as a floral designer also fed her spirit. Over the years, she shared her talents at Kookie’s Flowers in the late 1970s, Maui Rose at the Hyatt Regency in the 1980s, and later with the original owners of My Flower Shoppe. She also spent time working in airport security before the TSA era.
Dorothy gave herself fully to family caregiving. She lovingly and diligently cared for her mother, Victoria Kamuela Kapuaʻala, until her passing in Kula in 2003. She later cared for her mother’s older sister, Margaret Ellen (Leslie) Wyatt, until Margaret passed at Dorothy’s home in Pukalani in 2006.
For the last three years, the community of Roselani Place was Dorothy’s joyful home. There she found precious community, nourishment, and comfort, embracing life there with gratitude and all the robust energy and humor she could muster.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Lendwell Helelani Motta (Judith), Victoria Moanalani Beamer (Keola), and E. KamLan Kapukalaniokalā Kapuaʻala-Fowler; grandchildren Kaliko Motta, Tiare Motta, Gabriel Roy, Sanoe Takushi, Kiawe Kapuaʻala-Fowler, and Kulana Kapuaʻala-Fowler; great-grandchild Rowan Takushi; and several precious nieces and nephews and their families.
She was predeceased by her parents, Victoria Kamuela and Ernest Raymond Kapuaʻala and her siblings, Ernest Kapuaʻala (Kukana and Roberta), Frederick Kapuaʻala, Allen Kapuaʻala (June), Elmer Kapuaʻala (Margaret), and Raymond Kapuaʻala.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Ballard Family Mortuary. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m., with service at 5:30 p.m. The gathering will continue until approximately 8:30 p.m.
Dorothy’s life was a blessing to her family and to all who knew her. Her aloha, creativity, strength, and devotion will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
