Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 16, 1966, Ernest’s life was a testament to kindness, strength, generosity, and compassion.
On December 2, 1989, he married Lisa, and together they built their greatest legacy—their family. Ernest poured his heart into raising three wonderful children: Charlene “Mana'o” (Jared) Moleta, Charalyse “Mapu” Akoi, and John “Ioane” (Alyssa) Puaa. His devotion and gentle guidance shaped them into caring, loving individuals, and his spirit will live on in their love for one another.
Ernest found immense joy as a grandfather, cherishing and nurturing his grandchildren: Kaanohiulakala, Kyren, Aleyna, Kamakana, Dominic, Kapeka, and Kia’i. Each grandchild holds a special place in Ernest’s heart, and his legacy of love will forever touch their lives.
For many years, he shared his passion for music with the world, using his gift to uplift others and bring joy to every gathering, offering a piece of his heart with every song that touched everyone near and far. He is also remembered as Da Barefoot Warrior, DJ on KPOA sharing reggae music over radio waves followed by performances with band mates in Island Posse, Tropical Rhythms, and Na Palala Nui at The Hula Grill, the bar at Embassy Suites, and many other restaurants and venues.
His love was unconditional and freely shared with everyone he met, whether family, friends, or strangers who soon felt like ‘ohana. He had a special gift for bringing people together, uniting hearts through counseling and by lovingly officiating weddings, vow renewals, baby blessings, and celebrations of life. Through these sacred moments, he honored people’s stories, offered comfort and encouragement, and created bonds that will be remembered for generations.
He is survived by siblings William (Kim) Puaa Jr., Charmaine (Jack) Cox, Stanley (Tiare) Puaa, Koni (Stephanie) Puloka, and Ziggy (Marivic) Puaa, as well as countless nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who looked up to Ernest and will always remember his unconditional love, his wise counsel, and his gentle humor.
Ernest was predeceased by his parents, William Sr. and Wahine, and siblings Cody, Conrad, and Tammy.
Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration, reminding every person whose life he touched of the power of kindness, family, compassion, and the healing force of love shared from the heart.
May Ernest K. Puaa’s memory be a blessing and his love continue to shine through all who knew him.
