
January 9, 1940 – March 21, 2016
Gaylord ‘Duke’ Ervan Albright, 76, of Kailua-Kona,
passed away on March 21, 2016. Duke was born in
Hutchinson, Kansas to Ervan and Mayree Albright on
January 9, 1940. The family relocated to San Diego,
California two years later where they became very active
members of University Christian Church. He graduated
from Mission Bay High School in 1957 where he met his
wife of 55 years, Nancy Lynn Albright. He graduated from
Chapman University, earning bachelors and masters
degrees in education.
Duke worked as a High School Teacher and Counselor for San Diego City School
District for 40 years. He also had a general contracting business, Albright Enterprises,
where he remodeled and built many San Diego homes during the summer months.
He and Nancy retired to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in 2003. Duke became a master koa wood
craftsman, creating unique custom pieces. He loved working in his woodshop, reading
novels on the beach, traveling with his beautiful wife, and spending time with his family.
He will be remembered for his witty sense of humor, generosity, and larger than life
presence.
He is survived by wife Nancy; son Aaron (Trina) Albright of Kihei, Maui; daughter
Kristen (Gregory) Hill of Huntington Beach, California; and three grandchildren, Joseph
Albright, Sara Hill and Alison Hill.
A celebration of Duke’s life will take place at Pauoa Beach this summer. Condolences
