

George Hideo Matsunaga, 94, of Kahului, Maui passed away at home surrounded by his family on January 8, 2026.
He was born on October 28, 1931, to the late Jack Juichi and Misayo Matsunaga of Haiku, Maui. He attended Haiku School, Maui Tech, and graduated from the old Maui High School in Hamakuapoko.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Reiko (Kuwashima); son Gerald Matsunaga, daughters Sharon (Herschel) Berdel, and Wendy (Darren Dung) Matsunaga; and granddaughter, Briana Berdel; brothers, Allen (Fay-deceased) Matsunaga, Ronald (Rena) Matsunaga,sisters Myra (George) Uchida, Judi (Richard) Jinnai; and by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased in death by his daughter, Myrtle Matsunaga, son Mark Matsunaga and brothers, Myles Matsunaga and Howard Matsunaga.
George was a Korean War Veteran and rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was honorably discharged with two Bronze Stars. He enjoyed being a Korean War Veterans Association member and looked forward to attending meetings. He worked for the Maui Police Department, where he retired as Lieutenant after 25 years. He then worked for Queen Kaahumanu Center as Head of Security for 10 years.
He was a man with many hobbies and skills, and he always put his family first. We will cherish the memories with him and we will miss him very much.
The family would like to thank everyone for their visits, kind words, and support, and would also like to thank the medical professionals, first responders, and Hospice Maui, who gave much care and compassion to George.
Private services were held. Burial will take place at a later date
