
Gilbert Joseph Souza, 68, of Haiku, passed away at his home on April 9, 2012. He was born in Puunene on July 12, 1943. Gilbert was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 3 for 38 years. He enjoyed his job as a heavy equipment operator. A Vietnam Veteran, he received the Bronze Star for Valor. He is a true hero to his country and to his family. Gilbert was a member of the Kaupakalua Roping Club. He competed in rodeos and won several buckles and saddles. His favorite things to do were roping and talking story with his friends. He always said, "Life is Good". He was blessed with a good family, good friends, and good rope horses. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Cynthia Caires Souza; son, Henry J. Souza of Kaupakalua; sister, Rose Martin of California; brothers, Wilfred Souza of Kaupakalua, and Stanley (Marie) Souza of Hilo and Makawao; grandsons, Jared (Denise) Wagner, Anthony Wagner; great-grandchildren, Kawika Wagner, and Kaimaile Wagner, all of Missouri. Gilbert was predeceased by his brother, James (Kathleen) Souza.
Services: Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mass will be at 10 a.m. and burial 11:30 a.m. at the Maui Veteran's Cemetery in Makawao.
