John was born on October 26, 1938, in Paia, Maui, to John Souza Klask and Elizabeth Perreria Klask. During his youth, he actively participated in the 4-H Club and the Boy Scouts. Additionally, he sang in the choir and served as an altar boy in his church.
In 1957, John graduated from St. Anthony High School, lettering in track and field. Subsequently, he enrolled at Maui Technical School, graduating as a machinist. He then moved to Los Angeles, California, to obtain a degree as a diesel mechanic from National Technical School. During his career, John worked as a diesel mechanic for Haleakala Motors and the County of Maui. While with the County of Maui, he worked at the county garages in Hana, Lahaina, and Wailuku, as well as the Department of Water Supply. John retired as the Automotive Services Coordinator for the County of Maui with 27 years of service.
In addition to his professional endeavors, John was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America. His service with the Maui County Council commenced with his tenure as the Scout Leader for Kahului School’s Troop 11. Over the years, he received the Silver Beaver Award for his exceptional and sustained contributions, which had a profound impact on young men of Maui.
John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Evelyn Duarte Klask; his 4 children, James (Kentrie) Klask, Kenneth (Laura) Klask, Thomas (Danielle) Klask, and Leanne (Ray) Shimizu; his sister, Elizabeth Kalawaia; 7 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Christ the King Church, Kahului. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., with service at 11:00 a.m. Burial at Makawao Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
