Born on August 10, 1958, in Texas to Lionel Passafuma and Marjorie Riveira, Laura was the oldest of three children and a proud graduate of Maui High School.
Laura dedicated much of her life to serving her community and helping others. Her involvement with the Maui 4-H Livestock Association began as a participant in her teenage years and grew into a lifelong commitment. Over the decades, she served in numerous roles, including as a leader for the Kaupakalua Hustlers and President of the association. Laura made a lasting impact on generations of youth throughout Upcountry Maui, mentoring, encouraging, and helping shape the lives of many young people.
Following a successful career as an advertising executive with the Maui Bulletin and The Maui News, Laura devoted the next chapter of her life to helping others as a Domestic Violence Advocate in the TRO Program for Women Helping Women. She found great pride and purpose in serving members of her community during difficult times and providing support to those in need.
Outside of work and volunteering, Laura could always be found where she was happiest — on her farm in Haiku. She loved caring for her animals and land, spending treasured summers with her grandchildren, and cheering enthusiastically for her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers.
Laura lived a life rooted in generosity, service, and love. She gave endlessly to her family, friends, and community, and in return was loved deeply by all who knew her. Her strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others created a legacy that will continue through the many lives she touched.
Laura was preceded in death by her father, Lionel Passafuma.
She is survived by her children, Reanna (Christian) Mattos, Crystal Leona Magsanide, and Marcus Magsanide; her grandchildren, Peyton Lynn Mattos, Silas Jax Mattos, and Abel James Mattos; her mother, Marjorie Vida; her brothers, Lonnie Passafuma and Michael Passafuma; along with numerous hānai children, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A private Celebration of Life will be held on May 31, 2026. Family will be scattering ashes privately.
