
Coach Silva was born to Alfred and Margaret Silva on December 13, 1936 in Wailuku, Maui.
He entered St. Anthony School as a kindergartener and was a graduate of the Class of 1955. He was very proud to be a Trojan and was often teased about “Bleeding Gold and Blue.” He also attended the University of Hawaii and was a starter for the UH Manoa Rainbows football team. As a freshman, he was given the position of center and always talked about their UH Victory over the University of Nebraska.
Louis worked for the State of Hawaii Dept. of Transportation Harbor and Marine Patrol until his retirement after 34 years of service. He later worked for Wackenhut at the Kahului Airport and had just recently retired from the Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus after almost 16 years of service.
Coach Silva enjoyed his many years of coaching Cross Country, Track and Field, Wrestling and Football at his high school alma matter for over 30 years. He also coached Football, Track and Field and Cross Country at King Kekaulike High School.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to Hawaiian music and in his spare time found relaxation in doing wood work especially crafting Poi Pounders. He also found joy in raising his Hawaiian plants especially his dry land taro. He loved traveling to see family and attend SAS reunions.
He is predeceased by a daughter, Carla Marie and is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of almost 60 years, Barbara Fernandez Silva and his three daughters Marietta (Garrett) Baring, Henrietta (Henry) Rodrigues and Loretta Silva.
Louis was the proud grandpa and papa to 5 grandchildren, Kanoa Quinabo, Kylie (Matthew) Silva, Karlton Baring, Koa Rodrigues and Kona Rodrigues. He also has 3 great grandchildren, Kalia Kele, Kelsey Quinabo and Kolten Kele, as well as 3 hanai grandchildren, Shelly Wingad, Haylie Joseph and Lavay Cadorna. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Aloysuis “Al” (Starla) Silva, Dominic (Cheryl) Silva and 2 sisters, Magdaline Hoopii and Bernadette Rocha.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 19th at 8:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Makawao with mass at noon and burial to follow at the Church Cemetery.
Coach Silva was a man of few words, but left a lasting impression and will be remembered and missed by many.
