Neil was born on November 3, 1950, as the youngest child of Tsutomu and Ella Kimie Watanabe. He graduated from Maui High School in 1968 and retired from Hawaiian Telcom in 2007, after over 35 years of service.
Remembered as a true 'jack of all trades,' he had a remarkable talent for fixing, building, and repairing almost anything. He generously volunteered at the Paia Mantokuji Soto Mission, loved exploring the world on tours and cruises, and treasured every moment spent with family and at his childhood home in Haiku. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He leaves behind his wife, Joyce; daughters Kimi (Guy) Kusumoto and Joni (Randall) Toshi; grandson Cayde Kusumoto; and brother Brian Watanabe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tsutomu and Ella Kimie Watanabe, and his sister, Karen Scapple.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the Namahoe/Olaitiman ‘ohana, the first responders, and the medical staff of Maui Memorial Medical Center. In accordance with Neil’s wishes, no services will be held. A private farewell will be held at a later date.
