Born on August 20, 1928, in California, Roger lived a long and vibrant life marked by adventure, love, and deep connection to the sea. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Helen Pannier, and his beloved sister.
Roger is survived by his devoted wife, Tala Vinluan, his children Steve Pannier and Karen (Glen) Allen, and his stepchildren Glen (Sandy) Kakugawa, Liana Kakugawa, and Wanda Kakugawa. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom he adored.
A true ocean lover, Roger found his greatest joy beneath the waves. He was an avid diver who could often be found exploring the deep blue, famously diving hundreds of feet to feed his cherished pet eel, affectionately named “Garbanzo.” His time on the water aboard his beloved boat, the Sunkist Scuba, brought him peace and purpose.
Roger’s warmth, wit, and spirit of adventure touched everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be dearly missed but remembered always.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held on June 23, 2025, at King’s Cathedral Church in Kahului. The public is welcome to attend beginning at 10:00 a.m., with the memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Roger’s love for the ocean by spending time in nature, near the sea, or by supporting a local marine conservation effort of your choice.
