

Throughout his journey, Matthew displayed incredible courage and unwavering hope. He fought with determination and grace, inspiring everyone who knew him.
Matthew was a devoted son, dad, papa, brother, uncle, nephew and reliable friend. He was a passionate, humble, respectful and loveable guy.
Matthew enjoyed wrenching on any type of vehicles - heavy equipment and machinery.
Matthew started his field of work at age 15 working for his father’s company, Otani Roofing & Construction for 20+ years. He then proceeded with his passion in tractors and heavy machines, where he started to work for his uncle Paul’s company at Otani Farms as a farmer. In 2012, he decided to start his own company, Otani Services, offering hauling and excavation services. He then carried on working at Betsill Brothers and ended at Mahi Pono as a heavy machine operator.
Matthew was always known as a source of comfort, peace, love, laughter and his calmness in all situations of life. He had an extremely big and giving heart. He shared and gave everything he had, even if it left him with nothing. Matt’s humbleness, generosity and laughter will forever be remembered thru the lives of many.
Matthew is survived by his sisters, Demaris “Dee-Dee” Otani (Billy Kekona) and Chiamei “Amy” Salcido (Roland); his children, Cymberlyn, Matthew “Brada”, Matt-lynn, Tyree, Stanelle, Jordyn, Tehya, Bri-Ann and Jonah; hanai daughters, Shyla-Ann “Ashley” and Shanice; his 26 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. They will carry his memory forward with love.
Matthew is preceded in death by his father, Roy Akira Otani Sr.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Ballard Mortuary; public viewing at 9am; service to start at 10:30am, followed by his burial at 2pm at Valley Isle Memorial Park in Haiku.
Roy Matthew Akira Otani Jr’s strength, love and courage will always be remembered. His memory and laughter will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
