Mrs. Satomi Seki, born January 15, 1912, in Glendale, California, passed away peacefully, on December 6, 2010, at the Maui Memorial Medical Center. Her life spanned over 98 years and covered most of the twentieth century. She was the wife of the late Rev. Hozen Seki, a Buddhist minister of the Jodo Shinshu sect, who passed away on July 20, 1991. Mrs. Seki attended schools in California and Japan before her marriage, in 1932, to Rev. Seki. With her enduring and dedicated support, Rev. Seki founded the Arizona Buddhist Temple (1933), the New York Buddhist Church (1938) and the American Buddhist Academy (1951), now known as the American Buddhist Study Center, and headed by Hoshin, their son. Since 1982, several years after Rev. Seki's retirement, Mrs. Seki and her husband, together with Mrs. Seki's mother, Shizuno Shiomasu, lived in Lahaina where, for over two decades, Mrs. Seki was active in the work of the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, before moving to Kahului in 2003. She is survived by her two sons, Hoken of Lake Forest, Illinois and Hoshin of Mount Vernon, New York, her granddaughter, Chandra Riccetti, and great grandson, Luca Riccetti, of Fort Worth, Texas.
Services: A memorial service will be held at the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission on Sunday, December 12, 2010, at 1:00 P.M. Visitation is at 12:00 P.M. In lieu of koden and flowers, contributions may be made to the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission or the New York Buddhist Church.
