Vida was born on December 29, 1947 in Lahaina, Hawaii; she was the oldest of 5 children. Vida grew up with a love for learning and was a dedicated student. In the hallways of Lahainaluna High School, she met and fell in love with Joseph Kowalski. They wed on January 12, 1968 and enjoyed 56 years of marriage together. During that time, they welcomed and raised two children.
Vida’s studies led her to Oahu where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics in 1970. She worked in accounting for many years, both in Hawaii and abroad.
Vida really enjoyed traveling with her family and had the opportunity to live in Virginia and Europe during Joseph’s service in the military. These experiences continued to foster her passion for learning and honed her ability to teach those around her.
A private and independent woman, Vida paved a path for her family by setting a strong example of speaking out and standing up for those in need. She sought to support and encourage others, whether it was a donation to a grandchild’s soccer fundraiser or her involvement with community initiatives.
She was a strong and influential matriarch for her family. Vida prioritized her family; with a sharp memory, she never failed to send a message or card for every birthday and holiday. She was always willing to lend a listening ear, providing comfort, guidance, and gentle admonishment when necessary.
Despite several years of health issues, Vida remained upbeat and optimistic. She focused her energy on keeping her family grounded and connected no matter the time or distance. She put all at ease with her patience and compassion, a true confidant for many.
Vida saw her ohana grow and was blessed to meet even the youngest of her great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Joseph; her daughter, Larisa (Sidney) Nakamura; her daughter-in-law, Alison (Heath “Beau”) Kowalski; her siblings, Diane (Josh) Finn, Matthew Nagasako, Martin (Colleen) Nagasako, and Jordan (Gail) Nagasako; her 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; and many other loving family members.
She is predeceased by her parents, Yoshie “Jane” and Masao Nagasako, and her son, Heath “Beau” Kaleo O’kalani Masanori Kowalski.
Her kindness and legacy will be remembered by everyone she came in contact with.
The family appreciates your prayers and support during this period of mourning. In honoring her final wishes, Vida’s ashes will return home to her family. Please send any cards and condolences directly to the family.
