March 18, 1951 – October 22, 2026
William Hirokazu Church, 75, of Hāna, Maui, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on October 22, 2026.
Born in Japan on March 18, 1951, William was raised by his loving parents, Lindley and Emi Church. Growing up in a military family, he spent his childhood living in several places, including New Jersey, Germany, and Utah, and traveling throughout Europe before his family eventually settled in Wahiawā, Oʻahu, in 1968. He graduated from Leilehua High School, where he developed friendships that lasted a lifetime.
William moved to Maui in the early 1970s, where he met the love of his life, Coleen Kong. They married and raised three children in Hāna, creating a home surrounded by fruit trees, flowers, and the natural beauty of East Maui. He dedicated 30 years of service to Maui Electric Company, working as a lineman and in various other roles, proudly serving the communities of East Maui.
In his younger years, William enjoyed diving, fishing, and hunting. Later, he found joy in mountain biking, technology, gardening, and playing cribbage with friends. A strong-minded and passionate individual with a kind heart, he loved orchids, music, history, and conversation. An avid reader and lifelong learner, he was known for his remarkable memory, endless curiosity, and love of storytelling. He also cared deeply about preserving the natural character and beauty of Hāna.
Above all, William was a loving and committed husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was especially devoted to his wife, Coleen, whom he lovingly cared for throughout her illness. Her passing in 2021 left a profound absence in his life.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Coleen Kong Church, and his parents, Lindley and Emi Church.
He is survived by his children, Malia Church, Sol Church, and Leyla Church; his brother, Michael Church (Renee); his sister, Mary Church; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Though his passing came far too soon, William leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories, meaningful relationships, and a legacy of love and devotion to his family and community. His life will continue to be remembered and celebrated by all who knew and loved him.
