Bill was born on October 27, 1948 in Stephenville, Texas to Troy and Kay Hicks. He was raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma.
An adventurous young man, Bill spent school breaks traveling the eastern seaboard from Miami to New York City or as a migratory worker traveling from Texas to Montana.
His greatest adventure was moving to Hawaii in 1973, first living in O’ahu then moving to Maui. He married in 1975 and spent time with his family hiking through Haleakalā and camping at Waiʻānapanapa State Park and Polipoli.
He established Bill’s Masonry (later Pohaku Masonry) in 1983, literally leaving his mark all over Maui in homes, golf courses and landmarks. Bill was also very committed to the community he loved, having been a member of the Lions Club, organizing fundraisers and participating in community cleanups. When he couldn’t donate his time, he found other ways to help.
Bill enjoyed golfing (he had 5 holes-in-one!), and was an avid reader— often reading two books at a time. Bill’s later years were spent at his Haiku home with his horses and beloved dogs by his side. You never met a stranger with Bill, he was a friend to all.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Amanda; daughters Joanna (Julio) and Mariana (Scott); grandsons Sean and Mason; sister Gail, numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends who shared in his life’s adventures.
Please join us in celebrating the life of a remarkable man. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 30, 2026 at 9 a.m. at Ballard Family Mortuary. Aloha attire is requested.
The Hicks family would like to thank Hospice Maui for their kindness, warmth, and guidance through this difficult time; to caregiver Sally Bermudez; to Eloise and Herbert Kenolio for their love and support; to Marada and Linda Decker for their decades of friendship; and to all who have made this Celebration of Life possible.
Mahalo Pumehana!
