

Dr Zacarias G. Asuncion Jr., MD, FACS< known to many as "Dr. Bing", a distinguished surgeon, medical educator, and humanitarian volunteer, died peacefully at his home on November 18, 2025. He was 85 years old.
Dr Asuncion was born in Philippines and received his medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1964. He subsequently completed his surgical residency at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he later served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he practiced general, thoracic, trauma, and cardiovascular surgery and held the position of Chief of Surgery at Henry Ford Wyandotte Medical Center. He was widely respected for his clinical skill, professional integrity, and commitment to patient care.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Asuncion was deeply devoted to his family. he was a steady and thoughtful presence as a father and grandfather, offering guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support, He took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren and remained closely connected to them throughout his life.
After retiring in 2006, Dr. Asuncion relocated to Maui, Hawai, where he continued to devote himself to service. Beginning in 2007, he volunteered as a field Surgeon with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), undertaking medical medical missions in Liberia, Sri Lanka, South Sudan, Nigeria, the Jordan-Syria border, Leyte in the Philippines, and Nepal. Through the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society of America (UPMASA), he also worked with fellow alumni to provide free health care, medicine, and surgical services to underserved and remote communities in the Philippines. His work in conflict zones, disaster-affected regions, and marginalized areas reflected his enduring dedication to humanitarian principles.
He was also an avid traveler and lifelong learner. He attended astronomy classes and earned the designation of Master Gardener through University of Hawaii-Maui, a pursuit that brought him great joy in his later years.
Dr. Asuncion is survived by his present wife, Janine, and his stepdaughter, Tonya Dolence; by his first wife, Conchita; by his daughter Karla Sabram, and her husband, Theodore, and their children, Alexander and Isabella; and by his son, Michael Asuncion, and his wife, Shweta, and their children, Amara and Ayden. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, whose love for his family was contact and deeply felt.
A celebration of Life will be held in Maui later in 2026.
