Alice passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.
Born and raised in the vibrant city of Calamba, Laguna, Philippines, Alice grew up surrounded by a strong sense of family and faith. She trained as an elementary school teacher. In time, she met Rafael, married for 57 beautiful years. Together, they made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada in 1974, first settling in Calgary, Alberta before finding their permanent home in Kamloops, British Columbia in 1975.
Upon arriving in Canada, she embraced the most challenging and rewarding occupation of her life, that of a stay-at-home mom. With unwavering dedication, she shuttled her two daughters to Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, St. Ann’s Academy, and piano lessons. She also cooked traditional Filipino dishes and created a sanctuary of care for her family.
Alice’s faith was the heartbeat of her days. A devout longtime parishioner of OLPH Church and member of the Catholic Women’s League, mom attended daily Mass at 7:30 a.m. without fail, drawing strength from the Eucharist. She also found joy from the familiar faces of fellow parishioners, friends, and priests who brought a smile to her face. Above all, she adored Jesus, striving each day to live as an imitation of Christ. In her final six months, this desire deepened as she sought holiness.
Mom’s language of love spoke fluently through acts of service: preparing meals and treats for family and friends and quietly arranging Mass intentions for those in need.
Alice is survived by her husband Rafael, her two daughters: Pam (Andrew) & Margie, her four grandchildren (Sam, Alex, Jenna, and Jake), her many cousins, nieces, nephews, as well as her beloved sisters and brothers-in-law: Erlinda, Mercedes (Vicente), and Zeny (Roger).
Mom lived simply, so that others could simply live. Thus, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society where contributions go directly to serving the poor.
With many thanks for the love and deep care from Fr. Thomas, Dr. Miranda du Preez, Home Health Team, Dr. Van Heerden, care aides, nurses, and volunteers from the Kamloops Hospice Association, and all her dear friends and relatives. You meant so much to her! A big thank you as well to all the relatives from around the world who joined every Sunday evening to pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet for mom. Those six months of prayer meant more to her than you’ll ever know!
May her example inspire us all to love more simply, serve more generously, and draw ever closer to Jesus and Mary. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
