

Mourning her passing are her son Peter (Kamloops), niece Helen Sanders (Keremeos), nephew Paul Broda (Collette) Prince George, dear friend Gloria Koester (Kamloops), one niece and nephews in Scotland and England. Ellen is predeceased by her husband Harry, sister Mary de Weert, brother John McLaughlin, and nephew Johnny McLaughlin.
After completing high school in Paisley, Scotland, Ellen pursued her chefs training in London, England and then worked as a chef at Fortnum & Masons in London, England. Ellen immigrated to Canada in 1967 with her son, Peter to live with her sister Mary and family in Chilliwack. She worked as a secretary at St. Mary's parish rectory, Chilliwack, and then became the librarian at St. Mary's Elementary school. She also taught cooking to High School students at St. Mary's Junior High School. Ellen was a long-time, faithful parishioner and worker at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and volunteered with fundraising and Meals on Wheels with her sister Mary.
Following retirement, Ellen lived at and managed the Lions Roy Campbell Lodge in Chilliwack for several years. She then moved to Kamloops to live near her son, Peter. Ellen enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Her interests included baking, preparing meals, animals, and she enjoyed singing.
The family extends a special thank you to all the staff of Garnet West – nurses, care aides, support service workers, and doctors who expressed their love and care for Ellen over the past four years.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 255 Nicola Street, Kamloops, BC on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. Cremation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Gemstone activities program or the BC SPCA would be gratefully accepted.
