son by her side. Lana was born on August 9, 1954, in Flin Flon, Manitoba to Malvin and
Clarice Einarson. The family moved throughout Manitoba; Lynn Lake, Thompson,
Winnipeg and Winnipegosis where Lana spent several years of her childhood with her
Amma (Icelandic Grandmother) and Uncle Lloyd Einarson.
Lana met her eldest brother Ellery Thorsteinson as a baby and formed an instant bond
with him. At the tender age of 16 months, she met Dale, her baby brother, and extended
great nurturing toward him. She quickly adopted the role of fierce protector and bossy
mentor, which she generously extended to her sister Fawn a few years later.
Lana moved to Winnipeg in 1965 with her father, brother, and sister. The family
expanded when Malvin married Margaret Webster in 1971 and created a ‘Brady bunch’
with the addition of Ellen, George, and Murray.
Lana attended various schools in Winnipeg, where she made many lifelong friends.
During those years, she loved hairdressing and caring for her cousins and siblings. It
was no surprise that her first career would be that of a Hairdresser after graduating from
Marvel Beauty School. Lana’s creativity would be expressed throughout her life not only
in hairdressing but in decorating her home, finishing furniture, crafting, makeup, and
fashion.
Her hairdressing career took her back to Winnipegosis where she opened a small shop.
She eventually moved west to be closer to her family and spend time with her mother in
Princeton, BC. There she moved away from hairdressing and became the first female
bartender in the region. This was no easy task and required a strong, confident, and
assertive individual…she nailed that part perfectly. It was here that she met and
married Jim Powell. Her life changed forever with the birth of her only son Jeramiah.
Shortly after Jeri’s birth, she moved them both to Kamloops. Lana became an
accomplished Social Worker, where she used her strong intuition and people skills to
assist and care for others for more than 30 years. Lana also provided a loving home to
many international students that she hosted and supported during their education.
Lana took great pride in her home and providing for her son. Watching him grow into the
person he is today has been the foundation of her most cherished memories.
That foundation was further blessed when Jeri and Laurel gave her the most treasured
gift she would ever receive; two beautiful granddaughters.
Lana’s home reflected what was most important to her; every wall and the entire fridge
was covered in pics of her grandchildren, family, and friends. She was happiest when
hosting dinners, family visits, and happy hours on her deck.
Lana unapologetically lived life exactly how she wanted to; never compromising on her
beliefs, who she was, and what she stood for. Those she loved, she loved
unconditionally.
Lana is survived by her son Jeramiah (Laurel) and two grandchildren; Emily and Julia,
her siblings Ellery (Maureen), Dale (Deb), Fawn (Ray), George (Judith), Murray and
numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. Lana is predeceased by her
sister Ellen (Jim).
Lana will be deeply missed. We find comfort in knowing that our loving Amma, mother,
sister, aunty, and friend was welcomed home by many predeceased loved ones. Her
memory will live on in the hearts of all who love her.
`
Lana was grateful for the help she received from others as a single mom, especially
after losing her home in a fire. Her belongings will be donated to others in need. Her son
asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to any organization that provides for
women and families in need, in her memory.
The family chooses to remember Lana in a way that honors her spirit and fun-loving
character and invites you to join them at the Celebration of her Life on September 30,
2023, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Oak room at Cottonwood Manor (730 Cottonwood
Avenue). Parking and access to the venue is available at the rear of the building,
additional parking on the front street.
