Alice was born April 27, 1943 in Findlay, OH to the late Gerald and Mildred Hoile. She was
predeceased by her sister Mary (Hoile) Roach and brother-in-law William Roach in 2018.
Alice graduated from Findlay High School in 1961. She earned her BA in Mathematics, Physics,
and Education from Mary Manse College, Toledo, OH, in 1965. She was an American Legion
Auxiliary member for 68 years. Alice began what would become a 37 year career in teaching in
1965 at Liberty Benton School in Ohio where she taught grade level Math and Geometry. In the
summer of 1967, Alice traveled to Hawaii to teach summer sessions in Algebra at Kalaheo and
Farrington High Schools. This led to teaching positions at Kailua and Kalani High Schools where
she taught both math and science classes for the next few years. In the fall of 1973, she was
hired to teach at Niu Valley Intermediate (now Middle) School. Alice’s love of math and science
inspired many of her students to pursue careers in those areas. Her second love in the arts was
apparent in a keen sense of unconventional art that left a legacy that continued through those
students fortunate to have been instructed by her. Alice was a true Niu Valley Lancer in every
regard from her devotion to her students to her vibrant school spirit. For her outstanding service
and dedication to her students, she received the last of her many Lancer Awards upon her
retirement on April 17, 2002.
Alice’s love of teaching came from a deep inner curiosity and an innate passion to share and
learn from others. She loved to learn about historical and cultural places. Although her initial trip
to Hawaii was intended as a short term experience, she fell in love with the people and culture
and decided to stay. Not a driver, Alice took The Bus everywhere and anywhere to pursue her
interests. She was a true friend to other riders and folks that she met along her way. Her interest
in history, people, and places was something that she loved to share with locals, visitors, family
and friends.
Alice enjoyed the simpler things in life. Window shopping at Ala Moana, taking in a movie,
reading a book, playing games, and making handicrafts were some of her favorite pastimes.
She passed down these interests to her children and grandchildren.
Alice is survived by her husband of 52 years David Naito; her two children Naomi (Greg) O’Neil
and David Naito Jr.; grandchildren Allison and Matthew O’Neil; sister Margaret (Robert)
Thomas; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Private service and Interment will be held in her memory by her immediate family at Hawaii
State Veterans Cemetery.
