Harry Char, 95, passed away peacefully at home on January 7, 2024. Born in Honolulu, Harry graduated from Roosevelt High School (1946) and then Macalester College in Minnesota (1951). He taught at Waialua High School where he met his wife of 56 years, Walnita (Wong) Char. In 1962, he moved to Kohala to begin his career as a principal and retired as principal of Waiakea Elementary School in 1983. He also retired as Captain from the United States Coast Guard Reserve in 1988. Being one of the founding members, he attended Hilo Missionary Church for most of his years in Hilo where he was affectionately known as Uncle Harry. In his retirement, he was an avid painter (watercolor). He is survived by his son, Duane, and daughter, Dana, five grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
