Jona was a proud member of the Honolulu Police Dept and retired in 1992 after 25 years of service. He worked in various departments including the Training Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Police Activities League (PAL) Director, Homicide and Narcotics Vice Division. He was also a Vietnam combat veteran serving with the 100th BN/442nd INF Regt. Jonathan continued his service to his country with the Air Force Reserve Office Special Investigation. Even though he was “retired” from HPD, he continued to work in investigations at the Hawaiian Humane Society, then retired from AIG, and last with National Insurance Crime Bureau. He liked to keep busy, but decided to “hang his work hat” and fully retire when his wife, Pat, retired from the bank. They both loved to travel the world with family and friends. They often went on cruises, visited Las Vegas (alot), Japan, Beijing, and more.
His first and only love was his wife, Pat. They were married for 49 years when she passed on. They were avid movie fans and enjoyed seeing all the latest blockbuster movies. They would buy their popcorn, large soda’s and watch their movies. Their last trip was to Japan with mom’s halau friends. They had a blast and dad said it was nice to see mom happy and having fun. Just months later, mom passed.
Everyone knew his second love was golf. He golfed most weeks with friends, some from HPD. He enjoyed his time golfing with his friends. He was a very social person that appreciated a good laugh and funny story.
Last but not least, mom and dad had 2 children. Darryn is the oldest and Jonalyn the youngest. There are five grandchildren between them. Darryn’s children are Hannah, MacKenzie and Boyd. Jonalyn’s children are Kuali’i and Auli’i. All five grandchildren spent weekends at ‘tutu and papa’s’. It was chaotic at times but mom and dad loved spending time with them. We are so grateful our children have fond memories of their ‘tutu and papa’.
