

Joseph Alfred Sowa, 94, of Kailua, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and former educator/administrator at The Kamehameha Schools, passed away Aug 6, 2022. Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, Joe joined the Navy in 1945, then graduated from San Diego State University and was recruited to The Kamehameha Schools in 1956. He retired in 1984, and substituted off and on for another 15 years. His passion for education continued even after retirement, with his work at Junior Achievement Hawaii and Marianas High School in Saipan. He was an active member of his beloved Auwaiolimu Congregational Church and its affiliates. True retirement focused on family, friends, fellowship and fitness with travels, cruises, and family gatherings. He was a daily regular with the Kailua District Park Senior Tennis Group for years before transferring his exercise regimen and devotion to the Kailua YMCA family of forever friends. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Iwalani Carpenter Sowa, his children Tom (Vivianne) Sowa, Kehau Yong, JoAnn Sowa, and Sarona (Tim) Farrell, his sister, Dolores Waters, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation at Hawaiian Memorial Park on Oct 21, 2022 at 10a.m.
Followed by 11 a.m. Celebration of Life service and reception.
Burial at 2p.m. at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery at Hawaiian Memorial Park.
