Kam Chor Young Lau

Born in Canton, China, Kam Chor was a dedicated, loving, and nourishing wife, mother and grandmother who always put others first. Having lost her father and separated from her mother at a young age, she was raised lovingly by her uncles. In 1941 she married Ah Dong Lau, who predeceased her in 2001, and while he was away teaching in the city, back in their village home she took care of her mother-in-law, children, and extended family and labored tirelessly in the fields and did whatever it took to supplement the income sent home from her husband to provide for the family.

A couple years after Ah Dong migrated to Hawaii, Kam Chor moved to Hong Kong with her mother-in-law and 3 young daughters. She worked as a seamstress until 1960 when Ah Dong sent for her and her daughters to Hawaii. Here she worked as a seamstress again until she gave birth to their son a few years later when she stayed home and became a full time housewife. She loved to sew and the outfits she designed and made for her family were admired and praised by all. She was an excellent cook and experimented with all kinds of Chinese and American food, dim sum and desserts being her favorites. She would share her dishes with friends, neighbors, and her children’s friends who to this day still remember and comment on her delicious food. She also loved gardening and raised beautiful orchids admired by all who pass by her garden. She had hidden artistic talents which she rarely displayed, enjoyed roadtrips and traveling with her family, playing mahjong, and singing along while watching Chinese opera.

She was an amazing person who was always smiling and saw good in others. She was easy going, self reliant and resilient, and above all, considerate and generous, humble and modest. She has led a long life, and though at times difficult, she always remained optimistic and upbeat. We were lucky to have her in our lives and blessed with many happy memories. She will be sorely missed. We all love her and will hold her dearly in our hearts for always.
