Mark earned a B.S. in Human Development and a Masters of Social Work, grounding a lifetime of steady service in learning, discipline, and care for others. His devoted commitment to people and community was evident in the work he chose and the responsibilities he carried.
Over the course of a hard-working career, Mark served as a Patient Service Coordinator with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), and later as Executive Director of the Hawaii Centers for Independent Living (HCIL). He also served as an Assisting Minister at Hope Chapel Pearl West. In 1984, he was honored with the TYOP (Three Young Outstanding Persons) of Hawaii Jaycees Award. Mark helped bring meaningful efforts to life as a founder and co-founder of DiverseAbilities, RecreateAbilities, and the “Tools for Life” Exposition—work that reflected both steadfast dedication and a sincere desire to expand opportunity and access for others.
Mark’s commitment extended beyond his professional roles into wide-ranging community involvement. He previously served on The National Council on Independent Living, the State of Hawaii Olmstead committee, the Aloha United Way Council of Agency Executives, the Hawaii Disability and Communications Access Board, the Waipio Little League Board, and the Community Advisory Council (CAC) of the UH Center on Disability Studies. He was a founding member of Hope Chapel Pearl West, served as a Cub Scouts Den Leader, and was a member of Freedom Pointe Church. Through these efforts, Mark lived as a beloved presence—reliable, purposeful, and generous with his time.
Mark is survived by his spouse, Stephanie Lau Obatake; his sons, David Obatake (Nida Obatake) and Andrew Obatake (Stephanie Obatake); his mother, Julia Obatake; his sister, Jill Obatake; and Two Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard T. Obatake, and his brother, Guy Obatake.
