Samson Luciano Mercado was born on June 19, 1941 to the late Luciano “Mac” Mercado and Emily Sanchez. Sam was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and longtime employee of Gaspro. While at Gaspro Sam enjoyed playing on the company’s sports teams, the Puerto Rican Softball Club, and “Us Guys” Mountain Ball.
A firm believer in the benefits of sports, Sam dedicated much of his time to coaching youth football, baseball, basketball and also served as an ILH Official. Although Sam loved playing sports, nothing brought him more joy than watching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren play the sports he loved.
Sam truly loved sports but relished in entertaining family and friends with his exceptional cooking abilities and skillful guitar playing. Sam was a proud Puerto Rican who loved listening and dancing to Puerto Rican music.
Sam is survived by his sons Shannon (Kim) Mercado, Sean (Sonja) Mercado, Seamas (Shirley) Mercado, Lawrence “Kaimi” Mercado; daughter, Lauren “Aulii” Mercado; stepdaughters Shanna Maikui and Amber (Robert) Ruiz; sister Robin Kersten; brother Dennis Bellinger (Sandy) numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and former spouses.
