She was preceded in death by her husband Lowell Brune, daughters Patricia Brune, Janis Brune Camerlinck, Marsha Brune Generaux, Laura Brune Steele, and son-in-law Mark Generaux. She is survived by her daughter Melissa Brune Bynum, sons-in-law John Camerlinck and John Bynum, daughter-in-law Sylvia Kenner, 9 grandchildren (Grant Generaux, Joe Camerlinck, Jill Camerlinck, Sarah Steele Graham, Amanda Steele, Katie Steele Tolley, Debbie Kalantari, Laura Bynum, Ted Bynum), and 15 great grandchildren.
Anna Lu was born February 19, 1930, to Evelyn Margaret (Williams) Hollander and Louis Earl Hollander. She grew up alongside two older brothers, William ("Bill") Hollander and Robert ("Bob") Hollander and attended Welborn Elementary School in her youth. Washington Rural High School was where she met several great, life-long friends including a country boy, Lowell, from western Wyandotte County. She graduated from Washington Rural High School in 1948 and married her high school sweetheart Lowell William Brune in 1949. Lowell always said, "I chased her until she caught me." They attended Baker University together for one semester but there was no money to continue so they came home, got married in 1949, started a family, and began their working careers.
Anna Lu worked for over 40 years in the Department of Motor Vehicles at the Wyandotte County Treasurer’s Office, rising from a part-time position held while her girls were in school to becoming the manager of the operation for WyCo. She served during the initial automation of vehicle records and constantly strived to provide higher and higher levels of customer service. Service and education were paramount to Anna Lu. She was heavily involved with USD 500 for many decades, working in all PTA groups and school support groups while her daughters were enrolled, and later as her grandchildren Laura and Ted Bynum went through the system. She made a quilt for each of Laura and Ted's teachers at White Church Elementary School, and when Laura's 5th grade class could not afford a yearbook, she organized and published one for them. She was involved in the PTA at White Church Elementary School, Eisenhower and Arrowhead Middle Schools, and was a financial supporter of the Schlagle High School Marching Band after reading about their need for travel funding. One of her proudest accomplishments was being inducted into USD 500's Reasons to Believe Class of 2013, due in large part to her work in the school district.
Anna Lu was also known for sports adventures with her family, as her husband Lowell coached girls softball before any leagues existed in Wyandotte County and co-founded WyCo Sports Association so his girls could have a place to play. Many happy days were spent practicing, playing, and watching softball with her girls. Anna Lu (“Annie” as she was called by Lowell) accompanied Lowell as he coached bowling at Ranch Bowl for decades and traveled the state of Kansas teaching others. Everyone in the family bowled and hours were spent "shadow bowling" with an iron in the hallway to get the timing down right.
Anna Lu retired in 1995, although in the years following it seemed the word "retirement" was not in her vocabulary. She was instrumental in introducing Laura to the lifelong joy of the piano, taking her to weekly lessons from 1999 - 2012. She was a life-long member of Welborn Community Church, serving in various leadership roles in her spiritual home, and singing in the church choir for decades. She was also a prolific quilter, creating a quilt for practically every person in Wyandotte County throughout the years: she made them for family, friends, educators, and anyone else she appreciated. She has been recognized county-wide for donating her hand-crafted quilts for fundraisers for the Leavenworth Road Association, Leadership 2000, the American Red Cross, the historic Grinter House, and Welborn Community Church. Her quilts are on display at the National Agricultural Hall of Fame. She served for many years in her local Brooks Eyes neighborhood group and always lent a helping hand where she could.
Community, education, faith, integrity, and love of life are lessons all who knew her learned from Anna Lu Brune.
