Archie E. Herring, 88, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2011 in Overland Park, Kansas.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at the Stony Point Christian Church, 149 S. 78Th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stony Point Christian Church.
Archie was born October 18, 1922 in Thomas, Oklahoma, the son of the late Raymond C. and Mary Herring. An avid baseball player and coach, Archie was asked to play for the Cleveland Indians but enlisted in the Army with a friend. After WWII he played baseball in the Kaw Valley League and on the Stony Point Christian Church team, and later formed Archie’s Stony Point Softball Team.
He worked for Air Flow Heating, then in 1952 founded his own business: Furnace Service Company which he owned and operated for 56 years and brought his son into the business, which is still at the same location in Armourdale. He was a devoted member of the Stony Point Christian Church where he had been a Deacon and a Trustee.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years: Doris of the home; sons: Bill and his wife Nancy of Hamilton, Missouri and Steve and his wife Tara of Kansas City, Kansas; grandchildren: Abigail of Kansas City, Kansas and Zachary of Kansas City, Kansas; great-grandson: Zane of Kansas City, Kansas; siblings: Raymond D. Herring and his wife Geneva of Kansas City, Kansas and Joyce Thomas and her husband Bill of Kansas City, Kansas and many nieces and nephews.
