Doris May Holt (née Cain), 98, of Edwardsville, KS, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 23, 2022. Doris was born on April 1, 1924, in Rothville, MO, and moved to Edwardsville in 1949 with her husband, Ray K. Holt. The two were married for 66 years until Ray’s passing in 2007. Doris lived in the family home for 69 years until her passing.
Doris was a loving and nurturing mother to her two sons, Gary and Bob, and a doting grandmother to her four grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy in life. Grandma Doris and Papa Ray were a constant presence at their grandchildren’s activities, and Grandma Doris continued that tradition with their great-grandchildren. She was always there with a hug and an encouraging word.
Doris was beloved by many for her positive nature. For more than four decades, she worked the register at Watson’s Drug Store (later Waggoner Pharmacy) in Bonner Springs, KS. She was Doris to most, and Grandma Doris to many others. It seemed like everyone in town knew the kind woman behind the counter at the drugstore. She loved being around people and didn’t fully retire until 1997 at the age of 73.
Doris was very creative and often made her own clothes. She took up painting later in life and many of her favorite works decorate the walls of her family’s homes. She loved painting portraits of her great-grandchildren.
Doris is survived by her son, Bob, of the home; grandson Cody, his wife Melanie, and their children Phoenix and Ella; granddaughter Amy Cooper, her husband J, and their children Cassidy (Kearney), Maya, AJ, Abigail, Eli, and Christian; grandson Dan, his wife Jill, and their children Brandon, Carter, and Emily; granddaughter Karen Lewis, her fiancé Mark Tamburello, and her children Logan, Landon, and Annabelle; and great-great-grandchildren Darci and Aeson (Cassidy and Bryce Kearney).
Doris was preceded in death by her son, Gary, her husband, Ray, and her parents John Cain and Mary Danielson.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Doris’ life from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, December 2, at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112.
