

Ernest M. Johnson (87), passed away Thursday, May 26, 2016, at Presbyterian Manor in Kansas City, Kansas. Born October 7, 1928 to Ernest L. and Muriel B. Johnson in Kansas City, Kansas, Ernie was the first of three children. After graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1948, he joined the United States Air Force where SSGT Johnson served at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska till 1954. During his military life, he married the love of his life, Shirley Brunksy in November 1950. After his honorable discharge from service, he enrolled at Kansas State University’s College of Engineering. Upon graduation, he hired by Black & Veatch finally retiring in 1985. Ernie was involved in a variety of organizations including the Silver Sippers, the Sunnyisde Club, and VFW Post 199. He is preceeded in death by his parents; brother-in-laws Jim Brunsky, Ed Valentine, Tom Creech, and Tom Verbeck; and sister-in-law Beverly Verbeck; He is survived by his wife Shirley of the home; sisters Yvonne Creech and Shirley Valentine; sister-in-law Thelma Brunsky; son Ric (Missy); grandson Dustin; granddaughter Lindsey; several nieces and nephews, and several extended family members scattered across the country. The family would like to express their sincerest and warmest gratitude to the staff at Presbyterian Manor where Ernie resided since October in 2015. In February 2016 we added Crossroads Hospice and Palliative Care to our family. Their team’s love and care added to his quality of life. We are so thankful to have all of you in Ernie’s life. Visitation will be 10 AM, Tuesday, May 31st at Highland Park Funeral Home, Kansas City, Kansas with the services beginning at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri 64105 or Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, 5445 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas 66104.
