

Major (Retired) Gary K. Chancellor, Kansas City Kansas Police Department, Basehor, Kansas, passed away December 19, 2015. Gary was born February 16, 1940, to Clyde and Evelyn Chancellor in Kansas City, Kansas. Gary graduated from Washington High School, Bethel, Kansas, in May 1959. He enlisted in the United States Air Force following graduation.
Gary married Sandra “Sandy” Sue in February 1960 at Stony Point Christian Church in Muncie, Kansas, and they remain members of the church to this day. Gary received an “Honorable Discharge” from the United States Air Force in June of 1963.
In October 1966, Gary was appointed to the Kansas City Kansas Police Department and graduated as “Patrolman”, on November 12th. Gary started within the Uniform Division and then transferred to the Traffic Division. Gary was promoted to the Rank of Sergeant in November 1973. In May of 1976, Gary earned his Associates in Arts Degree, specialized in Law Enforcement, from the Community College. Gary was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in October 1977 and while maintaining direction over the Traffic Division, he was given the additional role of “Public Information Officer”. In 1978 Gary was placed in charge of the Vice, Narcotic’s and Intelligence unit. In 1980 Gary was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned as the Assistant Operations Director within the Operations Bureau. In August 1981, Gary was promoted to the rank of Major and assigned as the Director, Bureau of Operations. Gary continued to advance through the police department with assignments as Director, Bureau of Investigations, Director, Bureau of Inspections and finally Director, Bureau of Services. Gary retired from the Kanas City Police Department with the Rank of Major, December 21, 1994. After retirement Gary was employed at; Kincaid Coach Service, Crossroads Tours and Nebraska Furniture Mart.
Gary’s father, Clyde W. Chancellor, passed July 1999 and his mother, Evelyn passed May 2008. Gary is survived by his wife of 55 years and ten months Sandy Chancellor, his son Criss R., his wife Rebecca A., her son Thomas J. Choate, and his daughter Cheryl R. Chancellor-Hillebert, her husband Michael. His grandchildren include; Matthew J. Chancellor, Rachel E. Chancellor, their mother Cindy L. Chancellor, Chelsea M. Sanchez, her husband Robert E. Sanchez Jr., his son Robert E. Sanchez III, and Paige N. Hillebert.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December. 23rd from 6:00-8:00PM at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112. Funeral service will be Thursday, December 24th at 10:00AM at the funeral home followed by interment with Honors at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kansas City Hospice, 1500 Meadow Lake Parkway, Suite #200, Kansas City, Missouri, 64114.
