Herschel was born January 21, 1926 in Armourdale Kansas. He went to work at 17 for the Frisco Railroad, then joined the Navy in 1943. He was an Aviation Ordnance Man until he was discharged in 1946. He went back to work for the Frisco while working on obtaining his GED. He then studied law at UMKC. He continued to work for the Frisco until he retired. During his time with the railroad he traveled to Oklahoma, Alabama, and Kansas. He came back to Kansas City, MO and worked as a superintendent for the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement.
He was a Mason with Wyandotte Lodge 3 in Kansas City Kansas. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and golf.
Herschel is survived by his wife Bettie Buckner of the home, a daughter, Sharon Pennington of KCMO, four grandchildren, Larry, Robin, Leanne, and Chris, two great-grandchildren Stacey and Carl and many nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents Nellie, and George, his Stepson John, his Sister Judy McClain and his granddaughter Nancy Lynn.
A visitation for Herschel will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Chapel Hill - Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, KS 66112, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers are Steve Ferris, Larry Pennington, Rick Nauyok, Robin Pennington, Tom Richmier, Renee Weeks, Steve Leverson, Mark McClain and Art Blankenship.
