Howard O. Washington, Sr., 75, Kansas City, Kansas passed away October 28, 2017. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM, Friday, November 3, 2017 with a visitation beginning at 11:00 AM at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kansas 66112. Interment will be immediately following at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
H.O. was born on August 14, 1942 in Jones, LA to the late Jimmie and Sadie Washington. As a child, he enjoyed playing baseball all day long, without taking a break to eat. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 19, 1967, serving in Korea and received many medals, including NDSM and AFEM. He was honorably discharged on April 22, 1969.
He was married to Helen R. Culbreath on December 23, 1967. They then moved to the Kansas City area, where they raised their four children. He retired in 2001 after 27 years from Quaker Oats. He was the head Deacon for Emanuel Temple COGIC.
H.O. was man of the year for Kansas in the mid-1980’s. He always enjoyed helping the youth and the elderly. He also liked to travel, going on vacations and taking photos. His proudest moments in life were the births of his four children.
His wife, Helen passed away in 2004 and he then met the other love of his life, Paris Bethea, and they were married in 2008.
He was preceded in passing by his parents and wife, Helen.
Survivors include his wife, Paris; children, Audrey Stemmons, Howard O. Washington, Jr, Willie (Sharon) Washington, Natalie Washington and Mickaela Gray; four grandchildren, Jaerard Stemmons, III, Emani Stemmons, Atavieo Drake and Kingston Washington; sister, Artelia Lane; step-sister, Mae Washington; and a host of nieces and nephews, other friends and family.
