JoAnn Velma Maleta (McDaniel), passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Lansing Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was 81 years old.
Born on January 11, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas, JoAnn was the beloved daughter of Marvin and Eleene (Miller) McDaniel. She attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1961. During her high school years, she met the love of her life, David T. Maleta, and the two were married in 1963. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising a loving family and creating cherished memories. They were married for 48 years before David's passing in 2011.
JoAnn dedicated many years to her work at Interstate Federal Savings and Loan in Kansas City, Kansas, where she formed lifelong friendships. However, her greatest joy came from her family. She is survived by her son, Scott (Rene) Maleta, and daughters, Stacy (Matt) Griffith and Stephanie (Shawn) McLaughlin. Her love and wisdom will continue to live on through her 10 grandchildren—Bryan, Genesis, Alex, Aaron, Ethan, Kayla, Thomas, Abigail, Lauren, and Kristen—as well as her eight great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her beloved pet, Sammy, who brought her immense comfort and companionship.
JoAnn will always be remembered for the warmth she radiated, her unwavering love for her family, and her famous taco dinners that brought everyone together around the table. She instilled kindness and resilience in those she loved, leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and deep familial bonds.
Funeral services will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kansas, on Friday June 6, 2025 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends and loved ones may call from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday June 5, 2025 to pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Lansing Care & Rehabilitation Center, 210 Plaza Dr., Lansing, Kansas 66043, in JoAnn’s honor.
JoAnn’s love and legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know and love her.
